Carbonated beverages, dietary habits and children
Several times we happened to read and participate in discussions on our forum, alcoholic beverages or carbonated given to children from an early age (many children consume carbonated soft drinks by two years). We have also seen how the first approach to alcohol is on average around 12 years.
To understand a bit 'more about the issue related to these drinks and eating habits that we give to our children, we interviewed Dr. Mauro Lombardo, a surgeon specializing in food science.
. Alcoholic beverages
1. Often I see young children (2 or 3 years) drink, with caffeine, such as Coca Cola. The habit of these drinks is just to see that it is they who request them and drink them in a natural way. What does the intake of these beverages in the smallest?
There are no scientific studies about it and then provide clear answers on this is difficult. From my point of view there are two sets of issues involved in the recruitment of carbonated beverages in an age so early: the first is essentially energy, it takes more energy without reduce appetite, the second is of a different habit to taste. If from infancy you get used to very sweet foods later in life, you will also always kind of taste.
2. Many parents are of the opinion that children should enjoy all that is valid according to them for this type of drinks (Coke, Fanta, Sprite, coffee). What do you think?
The problem is especially linked chronic use of these drinks. Okay eat them on some occasions, but take them every day is definitely wrong. I am opposed to the absolute prohibition, but I believe it is essential that there are no all day at home.
3. The belief that a little taste every now and not detrimental to the children is correct?
certainly expect at least 5-6 years before. As I said before we should adapt to a taste "more natural". E 'wrong in relation to this, start weaning with fruit and sugar or fruit and biscuits. We should be accustomed from infancy to take their food with no flavor added. The soft drink is a sweet addition meaningless. Much better to take a sweet from time to time that a Coke every day.
4. What impact does a child get used to drinking soft drinks?
And 'certainly wrong habits early in life are maintained for forever. The intake of soft drinks is linked together with other eating habits and physical inactivity, with an increased risk of childhood obesity and therefore diabetes mellitus type 2, which was once called "adult" but alas it is becoming increasingly early.
5. The consumption of soft drinks from what age is recommended and how often?
should never at any age. We say that is not prohibited (as I would be very hard with alcohol) but that should be taken only on special occasions and should be treated as sweet if not worse.
6. The wine is often included among the drinks that parents make "Taste", perhaps mixed in water. What is your advice on this?
a young age should not be taken any alcoholic beverage. After adolescence, a glass of wine a day is actually beneficial. The spirits are to be deleted at any age.
7. Dilute drinks with water is often a ploy used by parents to justify the taking of drinks not suitable for certain age groups. Need something to drink or is still taken with all the features (which are negative and positive)?
Dilute means eat less sugar, dyes, etc. but in general this "tactic" is overcome because Then he takes more. Better to drink alcohol rarely, undiluted.
Parents should set a good example by not consuming these drinks and, above all, by offering alternatives such as fruit juices (without sugar) or milk shakes.
Thank you for helping us give in clarifying these points. If she likes it can also add an extract from his CV that will publish his article with references.
